A Year with God, by R.P. Nettelhorst, is a thought-provoking devotional that gives both a glimpse of biblical history and a fresh application from Old Testament scripture passages. The author provides detailed information regarding time periods and cultures that enable the reader to gain a greater insight into time periods and cultures. The 365 daily readings are conveniently arranged by topics such as Fear and Doubt, Joy and Sadness, Peace and Conflict.
I found this devotional to be both informative and inspiring. The daily readings were concise but still packed with unique details. The various translations used for the scripture passages were valuable in gaining a new perspective. Characters like Noah, Abraham, Joseph, Moses, and Isaiah are explored in a way that helps the reader identify more personally with each one. People groups like the Israelites, Edomites, Babylonians, and Assyrians are all given a personification that enables you to have a more solid understanding of their trials and shortcomings. I would definitely recommend this devotional – both to those who might otherwise be intimidated with the Old Testament and to those who would enjoy a fresh yet accurate view of the selected passages.
